Ouster BlueCity to be deployed at 100+ additional intersections and roadways throughout Nashville
Expansion follows successful pilot in north Nashville area and multi-intersection deployment on Broadway for corridor-level analytics and traffic management intelligence
Ouster was awarded a multimillion-dollar contract by the City of Nashville, Tennessee, to deploy its complete traffic management solution, Ouster BlueCity, at more than 100 intersection and roadway sites following successful pilots and deployments in key locations. This initiative is a collaborative effort with the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT), Vanderbilt University and Ouster BlueCity distributor Southern Lighting & Traffic Systems (SLTS) to enhance mobility and safety in the city.
This expansion follows successful pilots at 8 locations in the north Nashville area and a 5-intersection corridor deployment on Broadway, Nashville’s famous Honky Tonk Highway, which attracts an estimated 17.3 million tourists and country music lovers annually. The City is leveraging 3D LiDAR to move towards corridor-level analytics across a multi-mile stretch in Nashville. By using the latest advancements in distributed perception, which stitches together 3D LiDAR data from multiple intersections into a single view, the City can access corridor-level detection of multimodal road user movements. Today, the Broadway deployments are helping to manage large crowds, congestion and road closures that often occur in the thriving tourist area.
This latest 100+ location expansion is a cornerstone of Nashville’s Choose How You Move program, the City’s voter-approved transportation improvement initiative. By integrating Ouster BlueCity into this city-wide modernization effort, NDOT is moving beyond traditional infrastructure to a smart signal network that prioritizes safety. This deployment provides the high-fidelity, real-time, anonymized data necessary to help meet the program's goals: reducing transit delays, protecting vulnerable road users (VRUs), and ensuring that Nashville’s corridors are safer and more efficient for everyone, whether they walk, bike, ride transit, or drive.

"By providing high-resolution, real-time data, Nashville can move beyond static timing to intelligent signal actuation that responds to the actual presence and volume of pedestrians and all types of vehicles," said Dr. Will Barbour. “Ouster BlueCity enables the City to improve traffic flow while simultaneously prioritizing the safety of vulnerable road users using data analytics, alerts and event recordings, creating a more responsive environment for Nashville’s road users."
By harnessing Ouster BlueCity, the latest 100+ site deployment enables Nashville to provide:
Dynamic signal optimization: Improving daily traffic flow and congestion based real-time road user demands.
Intelligent traffic management & emergency response: Leveraging LiDAR data for proactive road closures and emergency vehicle management during large events.
VRU protection: Detecting safety events such as near-misses and pedestrians outside of crosswalks, as well as managing large crowds.
Automated 24/7 data analytics: Replacing manual traffic and safety counts with automated data analytics and event recordings across varied environmental and weather conditions for improved planning and interventions.

Ouster BlueCity is a complete traffic management solution that combines 3D lidar with proprietary AI detection for multimodal actuation, alerts and analytics.
"Nashville is at the forefront of urban innovation, using LiDAR to solve the complex puzzle of pedestrian safety and traffic mobility," said Dr. Asad Lesani. "Ouster BlueCity provides the high-fidelity data needed to protect all road users – from pedestrians and cyclists to drivers – while making the city’s traffic infrastructure more efficient and resilient. This large-scale deployment signifies the continued market adoption of Ouster BlueCity for enhanced signal actuation, safety alerts, and data analytics."
