Setting a new standard in ITS: Ouster BlueCity with Rev8 steals the show at ITS America

Recap from ITS America in Detroit. Ouster BlueCity with Rev8 brings the world's first native color lidar to traffic management, delivering up to 500 feet of multimodal advance detection, with the first deployment streaming from Stamford, CT.

It was an absolute whirlwind of a week at ITS America in Detroit! We are thrilled at the success of the show, anchored by the official launch of Ouster BlueCity with Rev8: the world’s first native color lidar delivering up to 500 feet of advance detection for multimodal road users.

The launch of Ouster BlueCity with Rev8: A New Standard in multimodal Advance Detection

Traditional traffic monitoring systems are often flawed: blind spots, glare, heavy weather, and night-time conditions routinely blind legacy cameras and sensors. Ouster BlueCity completely rewrites the playbook. By combining our Rev8 digital lidar with proprietary AI software, the single system captures both 3D depth and optional native color data to deliver an unparalleled 3D digital traffic twin and 2D image visualization with up to 500 feet detection range.

The integration of the Rev8 digital lidar sensors elevates Ouster BlueCity to an industry-defining solution:

  • Advance detection: Delivering up to double the range and resolution of the previous generation, the Rev8 powered by the OS1 Max allows transportation departments to confidently reduce their sensor footprint and overall deployment costs while gaining up to 500 ft detection and classification of multimodal road users

  • The world's first optional native color lidar: Ouster BlueCity simultaneously captures color and 3D depth information without the need for complex calibration. This unlocks simplified zone setup, intuitive event analysis, and next-level situational awareness

  • Edge VRU blurring: The solution is designed for system-level privacy features at the edge while retaining the rich benefits of color data for pedestrian and cyclist added privacy

  • Built for long-term deployments: Featuring rugged hardware built to withstand the elements, Rev8 comes with a planned 10-year production life, ensuring long-term program stability and maximum ROI for public infrastructure budgets

Jaw-dropping demonstrations at the Ouster booth

From the second the doors opened, the Ouster BlueCity booth was electric. We welcomed a non-stop stream of transportation agencies, city planners, and forward-thinking industry leaders. Attendees didn't just hear about our new capabilities; they saw them live in action.

The first Rev8 deployment of Ouster BlueCity did not disappoint. Jaws dropped as booth visitors witnessed the long-range detection in full color from an active, complex intersection in Stamford, CT, proving our system’s detection accuracy, range and color visualization.

The City of Stamford, Connecticut was the first to install Ouster BlueCity with Rev8 native color, enabling advanced, 360° corridor-level detection to optimize traffic flow, reduce vehicle idle times, and minimize gridlock spillback. Using precise geolocation detection, the solution will also enable data-led decision making and faster interventions for complex safety events such as near-misses, speeding, and outside-of-crosswalk events.

Industry panels

Beyond the booth, Ouster was front and center in helping to drive the industry narrative. Dr. Asad Lesani from Ouster presented with industry experts on two powerhouse panels. A major highlight was the Ouster-led panel on the future of V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication. Dr. Lesani was joined by an incredible lineup of customers and partners—including Utah DOT, the University of Chattanooga, Vanderbilt University, and Commsignia—to discuss how high-fidelity lidar data is paving the way for fully connected, cooperative automated transportation.

The show floor

On the show floor, Ouster BlueCity was displayed in the booths of customers and partners.

ADASTEC

In collaboration with the Michigan Department of Transportation, ADASTEC SAE Level-4 automated bus demonstration using Ouster digital lidar sensors, showcased ADASTEC’s SAE Level-4 automated driving software platform and the capabilities of their automated bus in a real-world environment.

Cisco

At the Cisco Industrial IoT booth, Ouster BlueCity solution was featured as an embedded technology in their smart infrastructure demonstration. Today, Ouster works alongside Cisco to bring the benefits of lidar technology to key customers.

Econolite

Econolite, an Ouster BlueCity partner, showcased Ouster BlueCity at their booth, which seamlessly integrates with Econolite’s Cobalt® ATC controllers and EOS next-generation firmware, providing a comprehensive solution that transforms any intersection or roadway into a dynamic, data driven environment. Today, Ouster and Econolite provide Ouster BlueCity to over 100 intersections in Utah alone.

Why cities and agencies choose Ouster BlueCity

With over 700 contracted site deployments across intersections, corridors and highways, including the three largest lidar-based traffic infrastructure projects in United States, Ouster BlueCity is already the most trusted and widely deployed solution in the industry, and it's easy to see why:

  • All-in-one solution: Ouster BlueCity consolidates hardware, software and analytics stack that does the job of multiple cameras, radars and inductive loops for optimized traffic signal actuation and alerts. The same deployment provides 24/7 multimodal analytics delivered 10x to 20x faster than traditional methods

  • Reliability and accuracy: The complete system provides high-performance in adverse weather and pitch-black lighting conditions, sun glare, snow, rain or fog, boasting 99% stop-bar detection accuracy and a rugged sensor built to withstand temperatures from -40°C to +85°C.

  • Slashes installation time and maintenance costs: An average deployment takes just 3 to 5 hours with only one or two lidar sensors required (depending on application) on existing infrastructure. The easy installation eliminates the need for mast arms, trenching, and frequent lane closures while removing the burden of complex calibration, regular cleaning, and field service dispatches

  • Ecosystem integration: An open API architecture ensures seamless integration with existing Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) and industry partners.

  • Open API Architecture: Ensures instant, seamless integration with existing Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) and industry partners

Building momentum

ITS America proved that the global demand for smarter, safer, and more efficient infrastructure has never been higher. We want to extend a massive thank you to ITS America, our incredible customers and partners, and everyone who joined us in celebrating this industry-defining launch.

Detroit was an incredible launchpad, and we are excited to roll out Ouster BlueCity with Rev8 to more intersections and highways worldwide!
